This book started out with an interesting premise but unfortunately failed to deliver It features two of my favorite tropes pretend marriage and rich girlpoor guy both of which aren’t as common in romances as I’d like It opens with a great scene involving sailors and a press gang but sadly was less than compelling after that The hero freuently comes across as rude and difficult rather than just playful or likably cocky as I think was

This book left me with mixed feelings while it started as a slow burn HR full of drama and social subtext the second part was just a nice and somewhat silly romp à la Marivaux I love both but I really had the feeling I was reading 2 different

  9. says:

What a rompI thought this the most unlikely plot of any romance novel but it was a delight The characters are witty and charming and the eventual capitulation of Ethelyn is a wonderful moment Thomas is awesome

  10. says:

I thought there was no chemistry between the lovers and very little character development

Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and wished they d just get to the point That s how I felt while reading this book I kept waiting for the story to really begin If you ve read the synopsis then you know that Camilla has one of her servants Thomas pretend to be her husband We re well over halfway through the book before this finally happens And then it s over before it really even begins I think my expectations were just a little too high and while the story is pleasant it ended up falling a little flat for me When we re reading in Camilla s POV I liked her but when we re in Tom s POV I just couldn t see what he saw in her They don t have many interactions and shockingly few as husband and wife and I guess I just didn t feel much chemistry between them There is so much back story and build up that the ending felt rushed and so many characters did 180s personality wise that I was a little thrown off Reading it a second time I would probably enjoy it but as it is I just thought it was okay Content Clean romance
