Wow I so want to give this four stars I love mythology and Greek Mythology is definitely something I ve read a ton of over the years so this tale that modernizes the gods and goddesses a little and moves them to modern times should have really been enjoyableBut the gods ended up being two dimensional tropes lacking any real depth of character It was painful to read how they interacted and the fact that the hero was about as intelligent as a paramecium didn t help OK he wasn t really that bad but he was not engaging in any way eitherIn the end I had to pretty much give up on finding this to be a top story and just enjoyed it for what it was It is an interesting tale with a uniue plot and a twisted way of looking at many common story threads I think many people will actually enjoy it but for me it was definitely a trope to far

So there are lots of good things about this book the dialog the setting the premise the world building etc that are good enough at first to lead me to believe that this was easily going to be a 4 ish star book At least at the start of it anywaysI ended giving it 28 stars because the writer ends up mostly ruining things by turning the MC into a complete moron to advance the plot or create some action Not all the time mind you but freuentlyLOTS of timesEnough times that when he actually used his brain very rarely ie when dealing with Hades early on with the seeds it seemed completely out of character like the author was writing about someone else and I just couldn t stand the MC any or suspend disbelief This was made worse by the fact that the MC has to constantly deal with Greek gods in all their over powering might and capricious scheming and the sort of deus ex machinas and convenient coincidences the author is forced to cram into the story to keep the MC from getting constantly butchered was just ridiculous And not in a funny way eitherIn the end I decided to finish the book out of the hope that maybe the author would turn things around in the end but I wasn t happy at all how things turned out It really grinds my gears when a author decides to ruin things by breaking the characters like this There was plenty of drama going on already too with the initial premise no need to try and crank things up to 11 here

At the heart of this book lies a great epic awaiting to be told perhaps in a seuel The idea of a Greek pantheon behaving as mere mortals do eg interfering with the life of the mortal Alex is intriguing and playing between what goes on in reality and what happens when the gods reveal themselves in the hereafter could make for compelling reading The author starts on a promising note by revealing his protagonist as someone who sits
