Trails in the Sand

Ents as the backdrop Trails in the Sand explores the fight to restore balance and peace in nature and in a family as both spiral toward disaster Through it all the ancient sea turtle serves a reminder that life moves forward despite the best efforts to destroy. Trails in the Sand by PC Zick is a novel about family set against the backdrop of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the Upper Big Branch mining tragedy in West Virginia both incidents from 2010 In some families unless the right protocols are followed an accident is just a misstep awayCaroline Carlisle is a 45 year old freelance environmental writer who had given up on looking for love until her sister Amy passes away and her husband Simon the love of Caroline s life when she was a teenager realizes he married the wrong sister But in the Carlisle family nothing goes unnoticed Caroline s nosy aunts and Simon s brooding daughter object to Caroline and Simon getting married so nothing is easy for the new couple And the family s penchant for keeping secrets is a logjam to Caroline knowing the truth about her late motherWhen the twin energy related tragedies grab the attention of the nation Caroline is called upon to report on the saving of a large number of endangered turtles and attorney Simon helps his family in West Virginia seek recompense from the mining company for the loss of a loved one But it is the deep secrets they uncover about their families that drive this story and compel the reader to keep flipping pagesOne thing I really liked about this 400 page novel is the sense of being there where the action is From making contacts with the Associated Press to the bureaucracy of state wildlife departments Zick brings the reader into this complex world and makes these interactions seem very naturalBut since this story is really about skeletons in family closets I also have to say that Zick dives deep into the inner workings of a proud southern family and digs up enough dirt to bury a mansionOne thing that didn t work for me is the tactic Zick uses of switching points of view from chapter to chapter Even though she starts most chapters by telling the reader whose point of view is up next it was still confusing at times She also switches from first person to third person and back multiple times which was distracting for meStill this story will keep you guessing what really happened as Caroline follows the turtles from nest to sea and turns over a few rocks on the way

Reaten to destroy her family unless she can heal the hurts from a lifetime of lies To make matters worse Caroline's love for her late sister's husband Simon creates an uproar in a southern family already set on a collision course with its pastUsing real life ev. On the surface Trails In The Sand by P C Zick centers around the massive Gulf oil spill of spring 2010 Actually this is just the backdrop of the story and pales in comparison to the destructive force of one supremely dysfunctional family But Ms Zick s book is much it is a cleverly drafted challenge to the reader to define their parameters for tolerance in human behavior To me that s what makes the book so powerfulThe action takes place primarily from St Augustine Fl to St George Island the trigger on the Florida panhandle familiar turf for me since I grew up there in the 50s and 60s so I can attest to Ms Zick s accuracy of setting color and feel for the area even though the time frame is a little later Her narrative brought many memories flooding back to me of this very uniue part of AmericaCaroline is a 40ish journalistnaturalist who has been assigned to cover the effect of the oil spill on area wildlife in particular the loggerhead turtles on St George who months earlier emerged from the ocean crawled across the sand to the same spot where they were hatched then laid their eggs While Caroline tries to rescue the turtles from the man made sledge threatening to annihilate them she seems powerless to escape from the familial sludge engulfing herThis goes back to her Dr JekyllMr Hyde grandfather To his patients he was a saint to his family he was often a monster especially to his daughter Gladdy Caroline s abusive mother And there was also no love lost between Caroline and her only sibling Amy who was the apple of Gladdy s eye even though she suffered from anorexia In addition Caroline was in love with Simon from the time she was a child but Simon married Amy instead Caroline finally got Simon but by stepping across her sister s graveNo spoilers here this is just the beginning It gets much complicated with earth shattering revelations occurring right up to the last few pages There s Caroline s rebellious niece Jodi still in college who despises Caroline for marrying her father before her mother is even cold in the ground There s Holly Caroline s best friend who is a relationship therapist but whose own love life is a disaster There s the mysterious George think Sam Elliot who knew Gladdy s secrets from long ago And BTW who really burned down the family home Then there s Simon duller than Ashley Wilkes Why has Caroline been obsessed with him her entire life Lots of page turning enigmasI was impressed by how Ms Zick never portrayed Caroline in heroic terms yet still managed to make her compelling and somebody we root for again shades of Ms Mitchell Caroline is definitely a daughter of the New South strong resilient independent but she does have a heart just not a confectionary oneIn lesser hands Trails In The Sand could have degenerated into a salacious soap opera but Ms Zick never lets that happen Instead she challenges the reader to examine these very flawed characters in a way that says how would YOU judge them She doesn t make that judgement for us and how the reader answers will reveal much about themselves Ultimately when all is said and done like the turtles all we leave behind is our trails in the sand Highly recommended

Trails In The Sand by PC Zick is an emotional read about family secrets and making peace with the past After her sister dies Caroline reconnects with her family and with Simon the man that her sister stole from her and married Said widower Simon has an adopted daughter that needs to come to terms with her status and with the new relationship between her aunt and her father Thrown into the mix are a few family issues such as a drowning in 1956 and revelations that come from diaries As you can see that there are a lot of issues to be resolved in this family making it an emotionally charged sceneZick uses several separate narratives for this story to bring different perspectives into the book and also includes several sub plots making for a rich reading experience There is an important plotline which concerns the 2010 Deepwater Oil Spillage in the Mexican Gulf a metaphor for hidden or covered up tragedies and wrong doings that ultimately force their way to the surface and spill onto the shore Caroline being a writer and journalist that concerns herself with environmental issues not just the oil spillage describes the horrific damage to the wildlife and the coast She also writes also about a coal mining disaster in Virginia which helps to take the focus of just one or the other oversight or cover up making it a global theme The family is under severe stress from both external and internal forces and as they unite to save sea turtles and work together on the present they let go of the past and begin to forgive and to healThe writing in this novel is immaculate and tight for example the Prologue begins in 1956 with the drowning of Alex Caroline s uncle and the story ends in the same spot a beautifully chosen way to complete the circle The dialogue and the weaving together of the various plots and narratives works well to unfold the story and make this an interesting read The characters are well composed and believable and make for an engaging and convincing portrayal of their inner strugglesZick writes with much empathy and insight into her characters showing a very caring and committed attitude towards the environment and the human beings in it The interplay between the story lines private lives and newspaper stories that are woven into the narrative adds much depth to the book
